Our Learning Aims

In 2009 the Department of Education invited the School to offer a second specialism.  Science was chosen by the School in order to further enhance our academic provision and to focus students on the importance of Science in their general aspirations and future careers.  This Science focus permeates our whole school curriculum and additional provision is arranged through extra curricular activities that support and augment our work within the Science Faculty.

Our aim is to use the School’s specialist status to create a challenging and visible ethos that raises standards of achievement and the quality of teaching for all of our students.  We aim to develop students to use their scientific knowledge and understanding with confidence and accuracy whatever their level of ability in order that they reach their true potential.

We use a rich variety of teaching and learning strategies, including ICT and a range of experimentation, theoretical teaching, and discussion in lessons.  Our students are given the opportunity to discuss and evaluate science based issues, and learn how scientific ideas contribute to technological advantage. We offer the highest standards of facilities, including high quality resources and a safe and comfortable environment.

Our intention is to enthuse and encourage our students in the wonder of science in order that they gain an appreciation and understanding of the impact of science in all aspects of their everyday life.

KS3

At Key Stage 3 our students study science for 3 lessons per week, in Years 7 and 8 a two year accelerated KS3 programme commencing GCSE course in Year 9.

Throughout the year individual students progress is monitored and evaluated via assessment for learning and end of year examinations, all of our students are set based on ability.  Any individual special educational needs are addressed and supported by a range of intervention strategies and we appreciate parental involvement.

KS4

At KS4 there is a range of pathways that lead to specific science qualifications.   Students, dependent on ability, can choose a course that will support them in their careers, and potentially, develop our scientists of the future.

Triple Science

This qualification leads to 3 GCSE’s through the AQA exam board.  Biology, Chemistry and Physics are assessed separately leading to a GCSE in each subject.  Students study Science for six lessons per week over two years.  Each subject is taught by a specialist teacher.

This is a practical based course, with students following an outline scheme of work leading to external examinations throughout the two years.  Each subject requires that students take an internally based practical assessment – centre assessed unit.

This course is only offered to those students that gain a good pass in their Year 9 core Science studies and is ideal for those students wishing to take Science at A Level.

Additional Science

This is a practical based course, with students following an outline scheme of work leading to external examinations.  This course is followed by students, not studying Triple Science.  This course is one of the routes we offer to prepare learners for AS levels in Science or a variety of occupational science roles.

Core Science

This is a practical based course, with students following an outline scheme of work leading to external examinations.  This subject requires that students take an internally based practical assessment – Centre assessed controlled assessment.  AQA Core Science is taken by all students and is an integral component of separate sciences.  This qualification leads to a single GCSE.
