Our Learning Aims

We strive to develop, maintain and stimulate students’ interest and enjoyment in the process of learning modern foreign languages in order for them to achieve their full potential.  We have high expectations and we support students in raising their individual aspirations.

The Modern Foreign Languages’ Faculty is committed to a communicative and active approach to language learning, which allows students to be engaged in activities that have realistic and achievable targets.  Throughout the language learning process students also develop a range of other skills which are important across the curriculum and essential life skills.  These include translation, effective communication, comprehension and conversational skills.

We offer three languages for study, Spanish, French and Urdu.  Each of these languages offers its own unique appeal and can support the achievement of students in many of the other subjects offered at Witton Park High School.  Our area is extremely well resourced and facilities include interactive whiteboards.

French

We believe that the study of French is an advantage in the business world and offers real opportunities for work and travel aboard.  France remains one of the most important trading partners for almost all European and many non-European countries.  French companies play a large role in the UK economy and employment opportunities exist in the UK for French speakers.

GCSE specifications in French should encourage learners to derive enjoyment and benefit from language learning, and be inspired, moved and changed by following a broad, coherent and worthwhile course of study.

Spanish

The understanding and speaking of Spanish is becoming of great importance not only in Europe but also in North America, where it is often the language of choice after English.  Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world.  It is an official language on four continents and is of historical importance elsewhere.  Spanish is a popular second language and has more than 400 million speakers worldwide.

Urdu

In the United Kingdom Urdu is spoken and understood by majority of Asian Heritage people. In a multicultural society, the need to communicate, share ideas and develop an understanding of others is vital. Furthermore, as a business and enterprise college, we know that students need to be equipped to work within the 21st century’s global network.  The benefits to society are many: individuals fluent in other languages enhance our economic competitiveness abroad, and improve global communication.

Students of foreign languages have access to a greater number of career possibilities and develop a deeper understanding of their own and other cultures.
