Our Learning Aims
Our Faculty consists of Art, Drama and Music, we strive to develop, maintain and stimulate students’ interest and enjoyment in the arts. Students are able to access different art styles and genres as well as promoting their social and cultural development.
Exciting changes are afoot and we are eagerly anticipating our move into the new building in 2012 when we will have outstanding facilities for our students. Within the Performing Arts area there is a suite of rooms currently being constructed. This will incorporate two music rooms; a sound and video recording studio; open learning space; practice rooms and a large Drama Studio, which adjoins the main hall. In addition there will be three large Art rooms, an open learning space with ICT; an activity studio with a fully sprung floor; mirrored wall and a sound system.
At KS3 Expressive Arts is taught in 10 week modules, embracing Textiles, printmaking, drawing and painting, and Drama. At KS4 (GCSE and BTEC courses) Expressive Arts is one of the foundation subjects. Pupils may opt for either Art, Music or Drama.
Music is not included in the modular cycle, but is instead taught on a weekly basis. Music has undergone rapid development in the last two years. The department is well equipped with computers loaded with the latest software: Sibelius 3, Cubase SX, Music Matters and Dance eJay. We have an excellent range of musical instruments and other resources. We have enhanced our teaching and learning within Music by the provision of lessons via the Peripatetic Music Service. Our students have the opportunity to enjoy instrumental lessons which are available in brass, woodwind, upper strings, ‘cello, keyboard, guitar and drums. There are many opportunities for students to perform or display their work at events throughout the School year.
Our Faculty aims to provide a wide range of artistic experiences, working with arts professionals and allowing students to have the opportunity to develop an appreciation of aesthetic and cultural values.
We believe that the expressive arts play an essential role in enabling young people to enhance their creative talent and develop their artistic skills. We feel that through a variety of learning experiences our students will be able to develop an appreciation of their own personal, social and cultural identity.
